University of Exeter

St Luke's Campus, 79 Heavitree Rd, Exeter EX2 4TH

The University of Exeter is the main higher learning education institution in this beautiful Devonshire city. It was founded in 1851 as a School of Art by Sir Stafford Northcote and as student numbers increased, became the University College of the South West in 1922. Finally in 1955 it gained its Royal Charter allowing it university status and the name the University of Exeter.

At the time the university was split into 4 faculties: Arts, Science, Social Studies and Law. Today however, there are 6 main areas of study:

    • The Business School
  • Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Life and Environmental Sciences
  • Social Sciences and International Studies
  • Medical School

The university is spread across 4 campuses, two of which are based in Exeter (Streatham and St Luke’s) and two in Cornwall (Truro and Penryn). The main university is located in central Exeter and Streatham is the principle campus, containing many of the university’s administrative buildings as well as its own botanic garden, which even managed to grow its own bananas this year!

Combining world-class teaching and research, the University of Exeter was ranked 14th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. It is home to over 22,500 students and is a member of Universities UK, the European University Association, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Recent research to come out of the University of Exeter includes the identification and treatment of new types of diabetes and the invention of the most transparent, lightweight and flexible conductor of electricity in the world to date.

The university understands the importance of international partnerships and its Erasmus+ scheme allows students to spend part of their degree programme abroad as well as welcoming international students to study at Exeter for a period of time.  This scheme is funded by the European Commission and provides grants to help support study within the EU and EEA.
