Downing Students Fire Safety Information

Following the tragic fire at Grenfell high rise flats in London, Downing Students want to reassure all residents that your safety and well-being is our number one priority.

In line with our commitment to resident safety and comfort, we immediately instructed a root and branch review of the design, construction and fire management processes of all the buildings we operate, on the day after the Grenfell fire.

Following this investigation, we’re pleased to confirm that all buildings meet fire safety standards and exceed current legislative requirements, however we are not complacent and as a precaution will be removing some of the ACM cladding panels which have been found in the Verde property in Newcastle and CitySide property in Leeds. Panels will be removed with careful management that ensures the least amount of disruption for residents. We will continue to work closely with the city council, the fire service and the universities to address this issue. ACM cladding has not been found on any other Downing Students property.

We adopt an extremely robust approach to fire safety from which our operational and fire management plan evolves. As such, we would like to reassure residents that the comprehensive fire safety management processes we adopt, together with the design and construction of our buildings, including enhanced fire detection, alarm and suppression systems and sprinkler systems give us a safe operating environment that has been approved by the fire service and exceeds current requirements.

In addition to these measures our staff and fire wardens are trained to undertake proactive and reactive fire safety duties, which include building inspections and routine fire safety checks.
