12 Reasons to Study in London
1.The No. 1 International Student City
London is without a doubt a top preference for overseas students looking to study in another country. It is estimated that around 100,000 students come to the city each year, from around 200 different countries. This is partly what helps the city maintain its multicultural status and gives it such a vibrant, buzzing and eclectic atmosphere in which to live.
As a student yourself, this means more excitement, richer experiences and a wider array of people with which to mingle and connect.
2. Over 45 British Universities to Choose From
London holds an immense choice of over 45 universities, meaning you’re sure to find the right course and campus to suit you, whatever your study preferences or career goals might be. And what’s more, four of these universities are ranked within the Times Higher Education’s Top 40.
3. The British Library
If you’re worried about having adequate resources to support your degree and don’t want to splash out on expensive books, then let us point you in the direction of the British Library. One of the biggest hubs of education and learning in the world, this powerhouse of information and wisdom has a collection of more than 150 million books, with around three million being added each year.
4. Home to Groundbreaking Achievements
London has indeed been home to a high number of groundbreaking discoveries that were made within its own universities – DNA; penicillin; fingerprints. It’s also recognised as a centre for excellence, having paved the way for 70 Nobel Prize laureates.
5. An Abundance of Work Opportunities
A London degree is highly recognised around the world, so no matter what you’re specialty, you’re sure to be in high demand. Plenty of affluent industries such as finance, publishing, fashion and media choose to make London their territory, and there are also tons of internship and placement opportunities located on your doorstep, to make getting that early experience easy.
As a London graduate, you’ll also have a better chance of gaining a higher salary, as eight of the ten universities whose graduates had the best starting salaries were based in London.
6. It’s a City of Unbeatable Culture
It’s impossible to argue that London falls short of providing the full multicultural experience, with over 5000 museums and galleries within its boundary. These include some of the world’s oldest and most famous buildings, such as the British Museum, Tate Modern, and musical temples like the Royal Opera House, London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra.
It is also one of the world’s fashion capitals, while the famous Camden Town takes care of all of our musical whims and has produced some of the biggest acts known today. Dedicated foodies are also sure to be in their element, as London’s vast collection of cafes, restaurants, street markets and food festivals make it easy to sample tastes from every corner of the world.
7. One of the World’s Financial Capitals
Despite the country’s economical struggles over the last few years, London has managed to emerge stronger than ever. As one of the financial capitals of the world, it is a first choice for many internationally affluent organisations (including BSkyB, the BBC, Penguin and HSBC) to host their headquarters and overseas branches. Whatever your dream career – business; science; fashion; media; finance…you’ll be in the right place in London.
8. The Foundation of Much of Britain’s History
London has been the capital of Britain pretty much since the latter’s formation – around 1st century CE – and it holds many of the key stories, monuments and successes that have made the country what it is today.
St Paul’s Cathedral; Tower Bridge; Poet’s Corner at Westminster Abbey, and the Mother of Parliaments all rank highly among the city’s most historically significant attractions, which is as good a reason as any to live there. London has also been through a lot on our behalf – plagues; wars; fires; births and death of many famous figures and so on. If this isn’t a city worth paying attention to, we don’t know what is.
9. It’s a Cycling City
A lot of people cycle in London – 10% of its population in fact. It’s known as one of the easiest and most efficient ways to get around, and since the arrival of the ‘Boris bikes’ (Barclays’ cycle hire scheme) it’s now become even easier.
Try cycling to your uni campus or to your friend’s house to see how different it makes you feel. If you don’t have your own bike, try one of the city’s free bikes or see if your uni runs its own cycle scheme.
10. Reach Almost Anywhere
Thanks to London’s fast tube system with over 270 stations, getting from place to place in London town is a doddle, and most places are accessible on foot. If you use the tube often you can get an Oyster card for £5 to get 30% off all your fares, or even a Student Oyster card for just £2.
With London’s many airports, including City, Gatwick and Heathrow, there’s also no destination that’s out of bounds to you. And the city is connected to almost every other city in the UK, with trains leading to every other southern region and beyond. So you’ll never be more than three hours away from visiting your mates.
11. Student Life is Valued
London is well aware that students make up a large portion of its population, so goes out of its way to cater for these perhaps slightly less affluent individuals. There are student discounts on everything from goods and services, to bars and nightclubs, tours and events, galleries and museums.
Many of the city’s main attractions (like the British Museum and the Tate) are free, and your own student union will make sure nights out on a budget are taken care of.
12. Celebrity Spotting
With numerous British treasures and Hollywood stars alike roaming the capital, London is one of the best places in the world for celebrity spotting. Maybe you’ll see your favourite writer sipping coffee, or catch a well known movie star at a film premier. Whatever the scenario, its bound to happen, and in many ways it can be refreshing to realise that they are just like us.
