A Guide for Socially Anxious Students Moving into Student Accommodation in Manchester

Written by Param Bhatia, a Downing Students’ resident | International student, currently living at Square Gardens, Manchester

Okay, real talk. Before I started my undergraduate degree in 2019, I called my best friend in a mild panic and said the words I’ve now apparently made my personality: “I’m not going to make any friends”.
She talked me down. I moved in. I made a lot of friends. So, I know how moving into student accommodation, in Manchester especially, can feel overwhelming, especially if you struggle with social anxiety or worry about making friends at university.

Fast forward to a year ago, Manchester, a new city, a postgraduate degree. Same panic, same phone call, almost word for word, with an added: “It’s different this time. I’m not the same person anymore. I’m not social anymore!” Again, all panic without any rationality behind it. I don’t know why my brain does this. Maybe yours does it too, that spiral where you convince yourself that this time, the social magic just won’t happen. Whether you are starting your undergraduate degree, moving to a new city for postgraduate study, or simply feeling nervous about meeting new people, you are not alone. Many students feel the same.

5 tips for settling into Student Accommodation in Manchester

If you’re currently counting down the days to your big move into student life in Manchester, here are five tips I have to help you deal with this panic:

1. Remember That Everyone Feels Awkward at First

The first week is strange for everyone. Nobody is as confident as they look. Everyone is currently trying to figure out how the trash chutes work, where the best place to study is, and how to say “hi” in the hallway without it being awkward. You are all in the same slightly-lost boat, and honestly, that shared confusion is the best bonding material there is.

2. Being Honest Helps You Make Friends Faster

Being honest about the awkwardness works like a charm. Everyone is trying to look perfect in the first week, pretending to have it all together. Saying something like, “This is a bit weird, I don’t really know anyone yet”, out loud is the fastest friendship shortcut I know. Most people are just relieved that someone else said it first before letting their guard down.

3. Shared Kitchens Are the Best Social Spaces

The kitchen also happens to be the most underrated social club. Some of my best conversations started simply because I was making something, after a long day of classes and coursework, and my flatmate happened to be cooking something else too. I offered a taste to her, and she offered me some. Fast forward a few months, and we cook together and send each other recipes on TikTok.

4. Friendships Take Longer Than The Movies Suggests

The idea that you need a solid friend group by day three is a lie we’ve absorbed from coming-of-age movies. Friendships take time to breathe. Some of my closest friends here took a month or two to really click, and now I literally see them every single day. Give yourself the grace to let it happen naturally.

5.Visit the Acer Manchester Community Events

Square Gardens has a genuinely vibrant community with many monthly events, random food kiosks, and common spaces that actually get used. I know it can feel cringeworthy to walk into a room of strangers, but do it anyway, just once. That’s often all it takes to go from being a face in the hallway to a name someone remembers.

How Acer Manchester Helps Students Feel at Home

One thing that makes this transition significantly easier is the team here. It isn’t just a group of people managing a building; they are a lovely, approachable team that genuinely wants the space to feel like a home. They do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to breaking the ice. For example, just last month, I was leaving for class in the morning, and the lobby was filled with the smell of fresh croissants from Flat Baker (if you know Manchester, you know these are the gold standard) being brought out by the team. They were just…there for the residents. For free. If you are struggling with the transition into student life, Downing Students also offers dedicated student wellbeing support, with resources and guidance designed to help residents feel supported, connected, and at home.

Finding Your Place in a Supportive Student Community in Manchester

Be open to talking. Be the one to initiate. You’ll make friends, I promise. I’m living proof that even the most convinced sceptic can be proven wrong by a community that actually feels like one. People want connection; they just don’t always know how to initiate it. Acer provides the stage, the real neighbours, the shared spaces, and the chance encounters, but you have to be the one to step onto it.
