With the end of the year drawing closer, we have compiled an A-Z of our favourite things that have happened this year – we hope you enjoy looking back at them. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Downing Students!
Australia voted yes to same-sex marriage. (They also stole the ashes from us, but the less we talk about that the better).
British summertime, temperatures soared to 32 degrees.
Carpool Karaoke became a YouTube sensation with James Corden breaking America.
Dunkirk reached our cinema screens on 21st July with Harry Styles stealing the show.
Election saw an increase in the number of young people voting.
Fidget spinners took the country by storm with people of all ages trying the latest craze.
Gemma Collins from The Only Way is Essex – from hot dog dress to falling down a hole, she was a highlight for us in 2017.
Harry got engaged. The ‘Party Prince’ settled down and is set to marry Meghan Markle in 2018.
IPhone X was released on 3rd November. For those of you with some student loan left, you can get yours for £999!!
Joe McFadden won Strictly Come Dancing.
Kardashians featured in the press most weeks with two new Kardashian babies due to arrive in 2018.
Love Island had us gripped. We especially enjoyed watching Kem and Chris’ bromance blossom. Aww!
Man’s not hot! Nuff said!
Number one chart spot was stolen by Ed Sheeran as his whole album made it to the Top 40 earlier this year.
Oscars hit headlines this year as the wrong nomination was announced as the winner. Eek!
Portugal won the Eurovision song contest.
Queen Toff of the jungle. The nation fell in love with Georgia Toffolo from Made in Chelsea who won this year’s ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!’
Royal Baby, Kate announced that she is expecting her third Prince or Princess in the New Year.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, saw the biggest opening weekend of a film in 2017 making an estimated £20.7 million.
The Great British Bake Off was changed up this year with a new channel, new presenters and a new judge but we still loved it! We are partial to the occasional cake in the office…!
Usain Bolt retired after the world championships in London back in August.
VMA’s was hosted by Rita Ora this year with about 100 outfit changes!
Wimbledon saw Federer win his 8th title this year.
X Factor winners Rak Su released their new single with Naughty Boy and Wyclef Jean, we like it!
Youthquake was the word of the year! It means ‘a significant cultural, political or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people’. Who knew?!
Zac Efron, – although we aren’t too sure what he did this year, we just wanted an excuse to post a picture of him.
