Making your money last during the never-ending weeks of January may seem challenging, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Engaging in activities on a budget is a great way to have fun without breaking the bank. We have put together a little guide of some of our favourite budget- friendly activities for you to enjoy all year round.
Although your nearest cinema will often have student deals and discounts, make the most of your designated resident cinema spaces. Organise a movie night for you and your friends. A great way to bond with your flatmates with back-to-back screenings of your favourite movies in the comfort of your social spaces. You can even break treats to share for a cosy movie marathon! If you are a resident at New Park, don’t miss the January Movie Marathon on the 17th.
Put your singing skills to the test and belt out some cheesy pop classics with your friends. Another great alternative to a night out!
Enjoy your nearest museums and art galleries. A great opportunity to soak up some culture and learn about art, history, science and more.
Going for a hike, having a picnic in the park are great ways to enjoy the outdoors without spending much money. Nature provides a beautiful and serene backdrop for relaxation and wellbeing.
Get planning a dinner party for you and your flatmates. You can even theme them based on a cuisine of your choice and prepare a course each. For example, fajitas and nachos make a tasty and affordable meal with plenty of portions available for you and your friends to enjoy. Chinese Lunar New Year is another great excuse to host a dinner party and explore new cultures.
There are plenty of free things to do when you are at University so look out for what events are taking place around you. A great idea is to check out your nearest Student Union’s calendar to see what is happening in and around campus. Each of our Downing Students’ residences host fantastic monthly events for you to get involved with, giving you the chance to socialise with your neighbours. You can keep up to date with the latest activity in your residence here.
Take part in a fitness challenge like our residents at Cityside and The Railyard will be from the 15th onwards in our steps competition. Or if yoga is more your thing, take part in a resident session on the 31st at City Village.
A great alternative to a night out! Whether it’s getting competitive in a game of monopoly, testing your knowledge at a game of Pictionary, or even showing off your moves in a game of twister – teamwork makes the dream work! You could even see what free games apps are available to download, like Heads Up! UNO, Monopoly, or Draw Something to name a few.
