Pancake Day is almost here! And that means an easy comfort meal that can be rustled up in mere moments, made pretty spectacular with the help of a few simple toppings.

Most people across the nation will be anticipating this much-loved food holiday come February 9th. But for students, its highlights reach a whole new level. Here are five reasons why Pancake Day is the ultimate student dream.

1. It’s Cheap

It’s never been in student nature to dismiss a cheap meal, and the humble pancake is no exception. Made from just three ingredients that are store-cupboard staples, it’s hard to find an excuse for why you wouldn’t be enjoying pancakes next week.
Whether the ingredients are already in your kitchen or require a trip to the supermarket, this is a dish so easy on the wallet, it’s almost ration-worthy.

2. It’s Easy

Calling all lazy cooks! Never mind the takeout menu – pancakes are one of the easiest things to cook, and they really don’t have to take up much of your time. A basic pancake batter recipe takes around five minutes to whip up (faster if you’ve got a blender). And as you can eat them as you go, you won’t have to worry about going hungry for too long.

3. They’re a Perfect Vehicle for your Favourite Toppings

Once your pancakes are ready, you have every good reason to smother them in your favourite toppings without feeling guilty. Because…well, it’s Pancake Day.

From peanut butter, banana and honey to the simple lemon and sugar combo, most good toppings are again cheap to buy or things you probably already have in your cupboard. Drizzle on a bit of maple syrup and scatter with berries, or spread with nutella or jam. You might even want to go savoury with some scrambled eggs or cheese, or try the American classic – bacon with maple syrup. The options are endless – get creative!

4. There’s a Store-Bought Option Available

If the thought of getting out a frying pan makes you yawn, then you can simply buy your pancakes from the store, which has the added convenience of being microwave-friendly of course.

You’ll miss out on the fun of making the pancakes themselves, but you’ll get to enjoy them almost instantly and only need to worry about what you’ll top them with. Which is kind of the main point.

5. You Can Make It Social

Pancake Day is the perfect excuse to get your friends together and have a pancake party! Get everybody to bring at least one topping so you have a good selection, and see who’s better at the lost art of flipping.

If you want, you can make your pancakes beforehand and reheat them when your friends arrive. This gives everybody a chance to just experiment with toppings.
